Solem speaks out again - "Still no Fix for the Tavern Pass: Hearthstone on Fire"

    Posted: 25 Nov 2020 05:31 AM PST

The year is 2024. You boot up Hearthstone.

    Posted: 25 Nov 2020 05:48 AM PST

Upon entering, you see your new daily quest.

-"Win three games with neutral hero tavern heroes."

You can't afford to rent one of the new neutral heroes from the Neutral tavern because you already blew through your gold loan for the year. (3000 gold at 15% interest rate though; that's a bargain you couldn't pass up.) Even though the quest reward is 4000 blizzard bux which you could use to trade for 400 exp or 20 gold, you decide it's probably smarter to spend your 10 gold to reroll the quest for something you can complete.

-"Invite two NEW friends to Hearthstone and have them complete a purchase"

Jackpot! This is the most rewarding quest you could have rolled with an insane 10,000 Blizzard bux payout(That's 1000 xp or even 50 gold!)

You glance over at your gold loan balance. You still have to pay back 1000 gold before the next expansion or you'll be hit with interest, and this would go a long way in keeping that from happening. Unfortunately, you can't use existing friends for this quest. Fortunately, thanks to the free trial-turning into a subscription fee a week after download, you can just find two gullible random people to download the game and chances are that a week later you'll receive the quest reward.

You exit the Journal tab and go to play some casual.

"You have (3) games remaining in the punishment queue. RNG will be affected until you are removed, please be more considerate in your future endorsements."

That's right, you had linked your social media and reddit accounts to your battle.net account because of the pack giveaway at the time. Unfortunately, this was part of the new, "Punishment queue" system in which players who spread misinformation about the game have various in-game probabilities reduced so as to properly educate them about the damage their lies have caused. You feel a slight tinge of regret for your post about how "I missed rent this month so I could buy the bundle and didn't recieve legenderies." Blizzard had deemed it "Community harmful" and you had been placed in the punishment queue as a result of your callous and harmful words. Still, the alternative is not playing the game and that isn't an option.

You queue with the least RNG based deck you have, Casino mage, to try to mitigate the punishment queue. The card design is really cool, with a lot of the cards in the deck being re-imaginings of the old Scholomance set but with a little more focus on random card generation and RNG. Your opponent is playing KENO Demon Hunter. You hope that they aren't a "Leviathan" class player and could only afford half the guesses allowed.

The game starts and the Keno card appears on your screen. It's as you feared, he has 50 of the 68 spaces on his Keno card paid for. He hits 4/5 of his numbers and starts the game with his 4/4 weapon, as usual.

You just cut your acidic swamp ooze's too because they put your deck's IGV(Ingame value) below the threshold for being able to queue. Unlucky.

Your opponent missed his combo for the OTK, but it still rolled a 5 on his, "Dicey odds" spell card, allowing for 5 additional attacks from his hero this turn. You're thrilled to get a turn so that this game counts against your punishment queue total. If your opponent defeats you before you get a turn, you don't get credit for the game. It's been like this for over a year and people still don't know whether it's intended or a bug, but nobody wants to risk additional Punishment queue games by asking.

You're still really looking forward to the next set, "Forwards from Arthas" and know that all of the problems with the metagame will likely be fixed once and for all when it finally arrives. Time to preorder.

The fact that we were progressing towards easier and more accessible quests only to slip back into quests that are restrictive and force you to do something you don't want to do is worrying

    Posted: 25 Nov 2020 06:25 AM PST

The quest system in hearthstone has always been kind of troublesome because many quests often forced you to play something you didn't really want to. A couple examples :

Play x of y tribe. If you didn't have any deck with that tribe but really wanted to complete the quest quickly, you were forced to create a useless deck just to play the amount of cards and then destroy it.

Win x games as y class. Was particularly boring when it was for a class you don't play often or straight up don't like. Winning is also really restrictive, so it wasn't that easy as just making a trash deck and quickly getting trashed on, you actually had to try.

Which is why the quests (before the new system) were going in the right direction : quests that needed you to play specific cards were mostly gone, quests that needed you to win games were replaced by just needing to play them, letting you feel some progress even if you lost a 30 minutes game. They even bumped up the gain of many quests in that time and introduced quests that you really didn't need to do anything to complete, like draw certain amount of cards or play x turns.

And then they introduced the new system.

First of all, every week I NEED to win 7 ranked game, which is already super restrictive and tedious. First of all I might not like ranked and since hearthstone is transforming into a big hub of different game modes, that is already detrimental because it forces me to play a mode I might not be willing to play. Not only I NEED to play at least 7 ranked game, I NEED to WIN them! Meaning it could take several hours just to complete that single quests (I, in particular, am a control player mostly, which means that I could play 1 hours and only get into 2 matches which I don't mind, but then lose both of them. Imagine playing for 1 hour and gaining 0% progress on a quest).

This, every week. I strongly suggest to at least change it to "play 7 matches of ranked" if you really want it to always stick around, and even then I would argue that "play 5 matches" would be much more fair.

Now that we talked about ONE quest, let's talk about the rest.

The quests literally so tremendously harder and selective

Win 4 arena games? I need to spend gold to even play, how garbage would it feel to go 0-3 and knowing you just wasted money gaining absolutely no progress on a single quest?

Play An Old God 10 times? Do you really expect me to craft a legendary card just to play it a certain amount of times for a quest? What if I, for some reason, despise those legendary cards? Why am I forced to play once again something I might not like?

Brawls not even granting quests progression? Why should I feel like I am wasting my time in the Brawls mode after the first win that grants me a pack? Was it really that bad to just leave Brawls as a mode useful to complete quests? I often received quests for classes I didn't like to play and used Brawls as a quick and fun way to complete them, yet again it feels like I'm being forced to do something I don't want to do

And yet it all feels so easy to fix:

You want me to play arena? How about giving me a free ticket, and then ask me to PLAY 3 matches, so even if I go 0-3 I still won't feel like I got scammed? Or how about give a discount on the entry fee?

You want me to play a legendary card? How about you give it to me for free until I complete the quest? That way I can try the card and see if I actually like it. Who knows, maybe i like it so much that I actually decide to craft it.

This honestly don't feel like atrocious requests. I think that the technology is there to make a card available for a limited amount of time, to make a discount on the arena fee possible, to make certain quests available only to the people that can make use of them, but the real reason is that you guys got greedy and thought about milking us as much as possible before making it a nice experience for the player.

Fix this mess guys, time is running up

Card from the upcoming mini-set leaked! Are there no limits to Blizzard's greed???

    Posted: 24 Nov 2020 09:38 PM PST

People complained about 3 wins for 10 gold for 5 years. People asking for THAT pittance back shows how trashy this game has become.

    Posted: 25 Nov 2020 11:11 AM PST

This community backlash is not going away, either. Blizzard has been caught deleting tweets and reposting them, all while lying (of course) and claiming the links in the tweets got messed up by mistake.

Yeah Blizzard, ignoring your paying customers and then lying to them when they raise legitimate concerns is really going to fix the problem. Cowards.

Here's my golden Gelbin Mekkatorque. I've been playing and paying Hearthstone without pause since the literal beta. The new rewards system was the final straw - today, I uninstalled. Thanks, Blizzard!

After taking $22,000 first place prize in Darkmoon Duel-fest tournament, Brian Kibler confirmed first player to be able to afford a complete set of Madness at the Darkmoon Faire.

Congratulations to Brian Kibler. This may be the first time many who know Kibler only through hearthstone saw him in proper tournament mode. There's a reason he came to be known as the Dragonmaster.

Does Bob really need to tell me to „refine my strategy“ by buying the pass every god damn 10 minutes?

I mean, Bob, I appreciate your concern but for fucks sake, I don't want the god damn pass, okay? Blizzard really out there just annoying people until they cave in and buy the pass just to get rid of Bob saying the same thing over and over....
