Introducing Hearthstone Access: an accessibility mod which enables blind and visually impaired people to play Hearthstone

    Hello everyone. Guide Dev here.

After countless hours and tens of thousands of lines of code, I'm happy to announce the first release of Hearthstone Access: a custom Hearthstone mod that enables blind and visually impaired people to enjoy Hearthstone.

If you know anyone who may benefit from this, please share this fully accessible page with them.

If you're curious about what the game looks like for the average blind player, here's a video of a practice game against AI.

Note that you may find it difficult to follow the game if you're not used to screen readers.

If you'd like to understand how the game is controlled a bit better, here's a video of the first tutorial mission which covers the basics.

For the time being, players will be able to autonomously go through the tutorial as well as play practice matches against all AI opponents. This will allow them to unlock all classes and basic cards while learning the game and reaching level 10.

If there's enough interest, I'll do my best to catch up on the past 7 years of features and keep working towards making the remaining game modes fully accessible.

Suggestions about what I should focus on next are very much welcome as I'm not familiar enough with all the game modes and adventures. I was thinking autonomous deck building, opening packs and friendly matches would be good candidates, but I'd be interested in hearing everyone's thoughts.

If you think this is a worthy cause and would like to contribute, I'm accepting donations via paypal and patreon to hopefully be able to dedicate more time to working on this instead of other paid work.

Being unable to play normal games with sighted friends has been an everlasting problem for blind and visually impaired people - particularly among gamers who lost their sight later in life. Collectible card games are perfect candidates for accessibility and many blind gamers have found ways to play games such as Magic: The Gathering competitively by adding braille to card sleeves. COVID-19 and social distancing have made this particularly difficult, so I hope Hearthstone Access provides an enjoyable alternative and serves as an example of how video games can be made accessible.

The savior we need right now.

Guys, I just got it. The reason why there are no player interaction anymore is to balance the new Rogue legendary

    Posted: 06 Aug 2021 02:17 AM PDT

When you think about it, it's genius. The new Rogue legendary Maestra of the Masquarade can fool you into thinking you're playing against another class, when in fact you're playing a Rogue. This can mess up your mulligan and early game plays. Clearly OP.

So how do you balance such a broken card? Well, what if you design a whole expansion so we don't need to interact with the opponent at all? Well, not so broken anymore are we, Maestra!

Classic Team 5, always thinking one step ahead of us.

    Oh sweet Justice

    Posted: 06 Aug 2021 07:44 AM PDT

So where is the otk meta?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2021 06:28 AM PDT

Today I played for about 15 games, and 10 of my opponents were paladins. Maybe it's because of my rank (diamond 2/3), so people play the decks with good winrates to climb. I think we should not ignore paladin again, and stop focusing on the gimmick otk decks, which we will only see few weeks.

Edit: Total Stats from day 3: 42 games, 19 paladin players

Can we please ban or nerf Stealer of Souls in Standard as well ?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2021 02:30 PM PDT

I unpopular-opinionatedly love this expansion compared to the barren Barrens. Quests are fun to play and Handbuff Paladin is actually a playable thing, who would say. However...

Turn six. Seven Cards left in the opponents deck. Quest done and Tamsin on Board with half of the hand that costs health. Stealer of Souls is beyond broken with The Demon Seed. I know there's crap-ton of these posts, but the nerf to this abomination of a card can't come soon enough.

    Thanks.

Are you interested in Warcraft Lore ?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2021 01:01 PM PDT

I personally started Hearthstone after playing WoW for several years and reading lots of stuff about the lore of the Warcraft games.

But I wonder how many people play hearthstone without knowing anything about the story or the characters.

Are there people here who play cards like Deathwing or The Lich King without knowing who they are ?

And for those persons, would you like to take an interest in the Lore of Warcraft through Hearthstone if there was a good support for it ?

First time getting a legendary in a 12 wins duel rewards - didnt know it was possible, usually getting tons of gold or a rare/uncommon golden + 1-2 packs

    Posted: 06 Aug 2021 12:20 PM PDT

Stealer of Souls was a mistake.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2021 12:49 PM PDT

I keep queueing with Quest Warlock, how making this card was a good idea ? It's just so easily breakable.

Please tell me I'm not alone thinking this.
