Thank you, Blizzard, for adding the 1500 XP Nozdormu quest!!

I was excited to find the quest and queue up in Ranked Standard with my Shaman deck and out of my 3 games one was actually touched by the blessing of Nozdormu!

Thanks again!! Playing Nozdormu was the highlight of my day!

Tavern Brawl this week is... "The Duelist Burndown!" (July 14, 2021)

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 09:46 AM PDT

Description: "It's the Burndown, Felfire style! Get a deck, Hero Power and treasure. Keep 'em if you win!"

Format: Premade / random class. Reminder that if you win, you'll pilot the same deck in your next game; if you lose, you will pilot the "winner's deck" (and HP) in your next game. Also please note, your "Treasure" changes every game, win or lose.

Reward: one Year of the Phoenix pack for your first win. Just to clarify on the Description's wording, the cards from the deck you're playing do not get added to your collection. This isn't like a Sealed or Draft event in MTG.

History: This is the fourth time we've seen the Burndown format; the first time took place in July 2019, the second time was March of 2020 and the most recent time was June of 2020.

Good luck & have fun! BTW the Treasures last time were from the KnC through SOU solo content. I'll try and crowdsource the full list:

    • Demon Hunter

      • Combination Strike (costs 1): "Gain +1 Attack. If a friendly minion attacked this turn, gain +2 Attack instead."
    • Druid

      • Nature's Grasp (costs 2): "Summon a 2/2 Treant with Taunt."
      • Ossirian Tear (passive): "Your Choose One cards produce both effects."
      • [name & cost]: "Deal 3 damage to an enemy or restore 3 health to a friendly character."
    • Hunter

      • Trusty Whip (costs 2): "Deal 1 damage to a minion and the minion right of it."
      • Gronnic Strength (costs 1): "Give +1/+1 to each of your minions (wherever they are)."
    • Mage

      • Fireblast Rank 2 (costs 2): "Deal 2 damage." (the Trueheart-style upgrade)
    • Priest

      • Fortune (costs 1): "Discover a copy of a card from your opponent's deck."
    • Shaman

      • [name], Passive HP: "When you play a card with Overload, cast a random Lightning spell."
    • Warlock

      • Pain Split (costs 2): "Take 2 damage. Deal 2 damage."
      • [name & cost]: "Take 2 damage. Summon a 2/2 Imp."
    • Warrior

      • Undermine (costs 2): "Shuffle two Explosives into your opponent's deck." (These are Cast When Drawn and deal 3 damage to the opponent when drawn.)
      • Tank up! (costs 2): "Gain 4 Armor."
      • Invigorating Brew (costs 2): "Deal 1 damage to a minion and give it +2 Attack."

    Feels about right

Kurtrus Book of Mercenaries is easily the best one.

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:00 AM PDT

I mean it. The story is great - feels much less childish than previous BoM's, while still remaining simple and enjoyable. The story is very cohesive in structure, starting with Kurtrus swearing to stop the warlock trying to summon Anetheron and ending with Kurtrus stopping the warlock trying to summon Anetheron. Roame sisters' story, while not too deep, makes this adventure unique. You know who's the warlock from the get go, you know what dilemma will Cariel face and every fight builds up the tension. It misses the ending speech from Kurtrus - I believe it might be a bug and can't wait to replay the adventure when it gets fixed.

That's it for the story - now, fights. Yeah, they're great too. Our deck doesn't change much between fights - if at all - but let's talk about it. Hero Power has such an interesting design - you can alternate between going for resources (replacing 2/1 weapon with 3/2, 3/1 with 4/2 etc.) or initiative (saving mana by equiping 2/2 every two attacks). Cards in our deck seem to be based on Outcast synergies - nothing to write home about, honestly. Interesting part are our special cards - the better [[Throw Glaive]] and the "replace all non-Outcasts in our hand". The Glaive is just a strong removal tool with the benefit of flexibility. Going Alone is amazing and hard to overestimate - it makes your gameplay so much more consistent. You had bad draw? You really need that Glaive? Cast Going Alone and you're good to go. Everything about Kurtrus cards and Hero Power screams increased player agency. That's what makes this adventure feel so good to play.

Now, the last piece of this wonderful puzzle - bosses. Every one of them feels unique and has underlying clear strategy to defeat. Samuro is an ok first enemy that puts pressure through his huge Frenzy/Enrage/Frothing Berserker minions. Aranna starts by showing immense threats inside her deck and forces you to put as much pressure on her as you can. Bristleback is actually weirdly easy. The Frost Lich guy - wow. This fight feels so miserable with 4-health minions until you realize that your opponent has no way to kill you besides his water elementals. Amazing fight against the powerful foe with 5 mercenaries is a great way to introduce you to the cool squad. Next two fight with Mercenary hero powers are just a blast. And the final clash with Tamsin that goes from really bad and smoothly changes when you kill Cariel - it just feels so good.

This BoM is the greatest send-off to Barrens we could get.

Anyone else think Battlegrounds is a well-made game mode?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2021 03:05 PM PDT

Don't think it ever got its recognition but I think Hearthstone transitioning into the auto chess scene was really well put together. It is designed really nicely and is much more relaxing than Standard or other modes.

It has its downs (balancing, hero issues, bugs, mobile) but overall I think it is a very successful game mode. It's also much more affordable to play than the other modes and I don't find it too hard to afford the battleground pass.

Shout out to everyone who worked on Battlegrounds!
