Top Cards of the Week from r/CustomHearthstone - 2/27/2021

I can't tell you guys how excited I am to see this card rotate. I play arena only and this card was so frustrating to play against for last 1-2 years. Thank you Blizzard.

Kobolds and catacombs was one of (if not) the BEST expansion in the history of this game.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 09:19 AM PST

You heard me. Kobolds and catacombs was criticized slightly for being responsible for a lot of Powercreep in the game - and this was the HIGHEST the Powercreep had ever gone to arguably in the entire history of Hearthstone - with Raza Priests gunning down opponents with its 0 mana hero power, cycling through the deck aggressively and fighting of swarms of minions, to Jade Druids spawning bigger and bigger men - the constant threat of ramping mana crystals faster than any opponent and drawing into the monstrous cards of Spreading Plague and Ultimate Infestation. To the realms of Cube Lock and Gul'Dan where smart board clears of Defile and Hellfire, would have to be played tactically and at the right time to reach its most potential - to escape to its outworldy endgame of endless Doomguards and Voidlords - To Jaina massing board clears of Dragons's Fury and Flamestrike in order to reach its end game infinite powerhouse of Frost Lich Jaina - spawning lifestealing water elementals and fighting for survival. To Rogue, playing Prince Keleseth on two, using Backstabs and Shadowsteps to cheat tempo, playing elite cards of Elven Minstrel and Bonemare, and fighting for board constantly. To Uther, where "Dude Paladin" shined, playing Call To Arms on Turn Four and using Lightfused Stegodon to buff Silver Hand Recruits. To Rexxar, swarming boards with deathrattle minions, cheating out King Krush with Kathrena Winterwisp and using Deathstalker Rexxar to generate terrifying adaptable zombeasts that could flip unwinnable games with infinite value. My point is, this was THE meta of infinite value, but also contained an extremely high skill ceiling. This was the golden age of hearthstone so far. I'll explain why:

-You know what you can play around

All the iconic win conditions of these decks had certain board clears, death knights at certain iconic mana costs, whether it be Hellfire or Lesser Amethyst Spellstone on 4 mana, Call To Arms on 4, Possessed Lackey on 5, Dragonfire Potion on 6, Shadowreaper Anduin on 8 - You can plan your turns ahead and play around certain powerspike cards.

    -Tech Cards

I feel like this meta was definitely filled with a BUNCH of creative tech cards that were infamous and also fun to include into certain decks in order to counter certain strategies, this included:

    -Spellbreaker (vs Taunt/Deathrattle)

-Void Ripper (vs Voidlord specifically + High health minions)

-Blood Knight (vs Divine Shield/Righteous Protector and Argent Squire)

-Harrison Jones/ Gluttonous Ooze (vs Weapons)

-Skulking Geist (vs Jade Druid/Inner Fire Priest)

    -Dirty Rat (vs Control/Combo)

-Rin, The First Disciple (vs Control)

    -Golakka Crawler (vs Pirates)

    -Eater Of Secrets (vs Secrets)

    -Second-Rate Bruiser (vs Aggro)

    -Glacial Shard (vs Aggro)

    -Gadgetzan Auctioneer (Priest)

    -Dragonslayer (vs Dragons)

    -Shroom Brewer (vs Burn)

    -Boisterous Bard (For Swarm Decks)

-Nerubian Unraveler (Against Expensive Spells/Board Clears)

    -Cobalt Scalebane (vs Dragonfire Potion)

-The sets in rotation at this time included a lot of creative cards and mechanics

-Whispers Of The Old Gods (April 2016) New "Forbidden" Cards Mechanic

    (Forbidden Ancient, Forbidden Ritual,Forbidden Flame)

-One Night In Karazhan (August 2016) New "Portals" Cards Mechanic

(Maelstrom Portal, Firelands Portal, Moonglade Portal)

-Mean Streets Of Gadgetzan (December 2016) New "Tri-Class" Cards Mechanic

(Grimy Goons Tribe - Hunter, Paladin, Warrior) (Kabal Tribe - Mage, Warlock, Priest) (Jade Lotus Tribe - Druid, Rogue, Shaman) Reference - Don Han'Cho, Kazakus, Jade Spirit

-Journey To Un'Goro (April 2017) New "Adapt" Keyword Mechanic + "Quest" Card Mechanic

    (Crackling Razormaw, Open The Waygate)

-Knights Of The Frozen Throne (August 2017) New Keyword "Lifesteal" Mechanic + Introduction of Death Knights

    (Spirit Lash, Malfurion The Pestilent)

-Kobolds & Catacombs (December 2017) New "Recruit" Mechanic + Legendary Weapons + Spellstones

(Guild Recruiter, Skull of the Man'ari, Aluneth)

All in all, my point is, with the combination of these expansions, the game branched off into different directions and all kinds of different meta's, each expansion felt different and unique. I'm going to list some honourable mentions of some iconic and well designed (arguably) cards, in terms of flavour and balance, that stemmed from these expansions.

WOTG - Mire Keeper, Fandral Staghelm, Ragnaros Lightlord, Shadow Word: Horror, Evolve, Ravaging Ghoul, N'Zoth the Corruptor, Y'Shaarj Rage Unbound, Darkshire Councilman, Call of the Wild, Forbidden Healing, C'Thun

ONIK -Cat Trick, Medivh's Valet, Ivory Knight, Priest of the Feast, Swashburglar, The Curator, Arcane Giant, Medivh The Guardian, Netherspite Historian, Barnes, Machezaar's Imp

MSOG - Kun the forgotten King, Aya Blackpaw, Alleycat, Volcanic Potion, Wickerflame burnbristle, Drakonid Operative, Potion of Madness, Jade Claws, Shaku the Collector, Abyssal Enforcer, Alley Armorsmith, Patches the Pirate, Mistress of Mixtures, Doppelgangster, Kabal Lackey, Kabal Crystal Runner, Devolve

JTU - Arcanologist, Living Mana, Terrorscale Stalker, Primordial Glyph, Meteor, Sunkeeper Tarim, Spikeridged Steed, Shadow Visions, Curious Glimmeroot, Lyra the Sunshard, Vilespine Slayer, Primalfin Totem,Volcano, Direhorn Hatchling, Fire Fly, Stonehill Defender, Tar Creeper, Vicious Fledgling, Elise the Trailblazer, Primordial Drake

KOFT - Ultimate Infestation,Hadronox, Bearshark, Sindragosa,Eternal Servitude,Valeera the Hollow, Despicable Dreadlord, Blood Razor, Dead Man's Hand, Prince Keleseth, Saronite Chain Gang, The Lich King,Skulking Geist, Spreading Plague, Bloodreaver Gul'Dan

K&C - Branching Paths, Oaken Summons, Candleshot, Wandering Monster, Flanking Strike, Rhok'delar, Arcane Artificer, Dragoncaller Alanna, Explosive Runes, Raven Familiar, Crystal Lion, Call To Arms, Lynessa Sunsorrow, Duskbreaker, Psychic Scream, Lesser Emerald Spellstone,Kingsbane, Fal'dorei Strider,Elven Minstrel, Sonya Shadowdancer, Unstable Evolution,Kobold Librarian, Dark Pact, Voidlord, Drywhisker Armorer, Reckless Flurry,Dire Mole, Plated Beetle, Zola The Gorgon, Fungelmancer, Carnivorous Cube, Corridor Creeper, Spiteful Summoner, Lesser Amythest Spellstone

To Conclude, Hearthstone hasn't felt the same to me after these expansions rotated out, I feel like the meta needs a bit of shaking up, even more tech cards would make the game more fun. I feel like the main reason the game is declining is because of Blizzard's monetary system but also decreasing the powercurve - Although this may seem good, it just makes the game more boring and stale where not much interesting stuff takes place. I also liked this meta as everything was mostly predictable with controlled RNG and not just decks filled with discover cards and lackeys that can swing the game instantaneously. Also deck decisions and tech cards actually mattered and smart choices were rewarded and stuff like, actually happened. I'd love to see an expansion like Kobolds and Catacombs again where the cards are just good and have potential to be and not just placeholder garbage that some of the recent expansions have been implementing. Maybe I'm just nostalgia chasing, but I want to hear your guys' thoughts on why this could've been Hearthstone's golden age, views and excitement was at its HIGHEST when these expansions were out and the world championship of 2018 was the best one I've watched as it was just such an innovative meta with so many decks . Maybe, the new core set could bring more enjoyment to the game than the stale state it is at the moment, with loyal players turning to battlegrounds, other card games and other modes other than standard since it feels so repetitive and draining and I don't even know why - just wanted to raise awareness on this topic.

Thanks for reading, for reference I've been playing since Mean Streets came out, I've hyperlinked each of the cards in the case that you forgot or do not know what a certain card/mechanic is. Any feedback is appreciated as I'm quite new/bad at making reddit posts/discussion threads. Thanks!

There should be more 'Secret Deathrattle' cards like Fatespinner

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 12:09 AM PST

Fatespinner is one of my all time favorite cards: Choose a Deathrattle (Secretly) - Deal 3 damage to all minions; or Give them +2/+2.

Such a cool mechanic with a lot of mind game strategy. Are there any other cards like this? Either way, would be totally cool if they added more variations of this mechanic to the game.

Ashes of Outland Prologue currently unplayable?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 11:38 AM PST

Hi guys, I'm a returning player just going through and trying to unlock everything I missed. I am currently stuck on the prologue for Ashes of Outland. The second fight, Xavius, currently does not play any cards and just kind of watches while I die a death via a thousand cuts. Not quite sure what to do, when I watched a guide on the fight I saw him playing cards for the other person?

Edit: Apparently I can't do any of the other story campaigns until this is solved because you need demon hunter for them :))
