    Welcome to the Barrens, adventurer. The land where blistered terrain and battering sun form the anvil and hammer that shape the unbreakable Horde.     New Keyword: Frenzy - Effects triggered the first time a minion survives damage. Minions with the new Frenzy keyword will trigger a powerful effect the first time they survive damage!

     

    New Mechanic: Spell Schools - Magical Spell Schools are a permanent addition to Hearthstone, which will be applied retroactively to many previously released spells, adding synergies and a new layer of depth throughout your Collection! Spells in Standard and Wild can now have a tag from one of seven different schools: Arcane, Fel, Fire, Frost, Holy, Nature, Shadow

     

    Ranked Spells - Class spells that gain power as you gain Mana Crystals All 10 classes will have access to an all-new Ranked Spell that will grow in power as your reach 5 and 10 Mana Crystals, regardless of whether it's in your hand or deck!

    • Duels will continue to see support, new heroes will be added later in the year, current heroes will NOT be removed.
    • Duels will see Forged in the Barrens and Journey to Un'Goro added next.
    • Rogue "will have burgle cards from time to time" in the core set.
    • WRATH AND SWIPE NOT IN THIS YEAR'S CORE SET. Removal focused on "feral" cards, possibly Feral Rage or Pounce.
    • Not every Core Set will have 29 new cards, but will feature new cards each year. About 30% of Core Set will change next year, they'll see if that has enough of an impact for years beyond that.
    • Blizzard wants to provide Control decks with "finishers" rather than merely outvaluing the opponent.
    • Blizzard wants to find a balance between "controlled" RNG (between Spare Parts and Lackies, acknowledging Lackies had a bit too much resource generation) and "wild" RNG (like Yogg, don't want it to be too powerful)
    • Forged in the Barrens will have Alliance themes (i.e. Northwatch) despite being mostly Horde. The 10 Mercenary Legendaries will also be split between Horde and Alliance.
    • It is possible for the Death Knight Heroes to come back, but it won't be this year. If they did came back they may see some adjustments.
    • Favorite memes: Boulderfist Oger, and the theorycraft OTK Rank 1 Legend posts.
    • Thrall is one of the characters in the Mercenaries Mode.
    • A "Murloc Expansion" would be tough to make, since they'd have to figure out how to make "bigger murlocs". But if they figured it out they'd be all for it.
    • There is still design space left for Quests, but if they came back they'd want to add another "twist" to it.
    • The old Dragons (Malygos, Ysera, Deathwing) will still be in Wild. Removing Malygos from Standard allows for expansion on Spell Damage.
    • The Three Kingdoms skins could potentially be a gateway into Crossover Hero skins (i.e. Overwatch), but they need to find the right avenue for them. They are very cautious on this front right now.
    • The Core Set could be a way to introduce brand new archetypes that didn't exist before. New Shadow Priest will be an example of this, and yes, this can include face damage (though not on the level of Mind Blast).
    • Potential for additional "Sphere of Sapience" type weapons is there.
    • "Random Hero Skin" will happen, its just a matter of when. "Random Coin" maybe, but there are so few right now so its lower priority.

    I've been pretty happy with Blizzard lately in how they've been handling the game.

    Outside of card balance, I'm pretty happy that they're changing things up with core/basic and am satisfied with how the new progression system has worked. Even without the battlepass I've earned more gold than I have in any other expansions, even when I was playing a lot every day. I'm happy they're lowering the paywalls slightly for the core and basic, and even though they cost 20$, if every set has a mini set, it's cool that the option is there to buy it for a set price rather than have to get more packs or craft them.

    I'm excited to see what comes next in the future of the game, and have more faith in them after the past year when it comes to this stuff outside of card balance.
