    Newbie Tuesdays Weekly Discussion

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 04:07 PM PST

Hello members of the /r/hearthstone community,

This is part of a series of weekly threads aimed at both new and old players from the community. It is designed so that everybody may ask any and all questions regarding the game's mechanics, decks, strategies and more.

Please keep it clean and try to add more than just a one or two word response. As the goal of this post is to increase the community's knowledge, the thought process matters as much as the answer! There is also a PullsDay Thursday weekly post, for those who want to share their pulled packs.

Sticky Threads and Guides - Great resources for new players!

Note: I am a bot. Questions or feedback regarding this thread? Message the moderators.

This sub is the part about Hearthstone I miss most after the battlepass debacle.

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 08:32 AM PST

I probably browse this sub more often than I play the actual game, and lately every time I check in I just get sad, but I still love the game at its core and want to see updates, fanart, whacky decks, etc. but every time it's just 2 extremes screeching at each other in the comments.

Whether it be the anti-blizzard hate train of "everything they have ever done is directly influenced by the meaty fingies of Satan himself" or the counter movement of condescending Blizzard defenders immediately shooting down any concern someone might have just because they're so fed up with the former of the two.

I get that it's kind of human nature to pick a team and put on your big foam middle-finger, but do we really have to be so polarized? It's incredibly frustrating seeing both sides of the argument completely disregarded from the get-go just because of their stance on things as they stand. I think we can all agree that Blizzard has made some missteps, be it balance or economy, but none of us would be here to begin with if there wasn't a lot of good to the game worth caring about.

That's just my little rant, not even sure if this fits the subreddits guidelines since it doesn't fit into either category of circlejerk that permeates here, I'll delete if it doesn't. Just wanted to say something because it's been bothering me.

TL;DR This isn't r/politics, you can have your views and not go for the throat.

Revisiting Kripp's suggestions on how to improve Hearthstone from Dec 2015

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 11:40 AM PST

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cs3H5NYQKVo

    1) Increase the number of deck slots. Offer one-time payments for more slots.

It's a meme for a reason. It was long overdue then and it's still overdue now. After this video, it did expand to 18 total slots, but we all know that isn't enough as the game continues to add cards. His suggestion of paid slot expansions seems like a no-brainer for Blizzard. I don't think most people would be bothered by that kind of paid add-on but for whatever reason, it never happened. Deck codes allowed players to save more decks in a roundabout way but it's just not the same thing.

    2) Add more alternate hero portraits

At the time this video was made, the first three hero portraits had come out but there hadn't been any more for months afterwards. He got his wish since there's a deluge of alternate heroes now.

    3) Three deck slots for constructed tavern brawls. "Fun style tournaments that would involve tavern brawl" Make tavern brawl all week long. Two brawls simultaneously - one constructed and one pre-made. Track how many times you've won in brawl

We did get week long brawls finally. It took five years, but wins can now be tracked with the achievement system. The high stakes competitive brawls are about the closest thing we have to tournaments. There's still only one slot for constructed brawls. Two brawls at the same time seemed like a big ask so I'm not surprised that never came to pass.

    4) Price reduction and rewards for arena to $0.75 or 50 gold or "freebie arena mode"

No change like this ever happened, however including a causal mode to Duels is pretty close to what he was asking for. It's possible that a causal arena isn't far behind.

    5) Buff bad cards

Cards from new sets are now getting buffs occasionally. Kripp is specifically asking for improvements to some basic cards so they stay relevant. This doesn't seem like it's ever going to happen as long as they can reprint other cards with a power creep.

    6) Adding treasure goblins as a random encounter that rewards a pack or gold

This is a high concept idea and it would be fun to randomly run into an encounter that could give you a real reward if you can beat it. While I'm sure it would be fun and rewarding, people would rapid fire queue and concede trying to farm these if they were in the game. It would also be really frustrating to find it and you happen to be running a deck that isn't optimized to win whatever the encounter is.

    BG's Getting to 9K- A Guide Part 9 - Defensive / Salvation mode

    Hey guys!

This guide is one of the most important guides we had yet!

After getting to 14k, I wanted to share one of the most important things that helped me get there.

In this one, we are going to talk about how to turn a game when getting top 8 is super easy, into something better, that might save you a lot of points.

We all have those bad games when we get a terrible hero and/or very poor shops in the early game.

This kind of game can go 2 ways.

    1. You get tilted, autopilot your way into 8th, BOOM minus 100 mmr.
    2. You identify the situation early, go into defensive mode, and get top 4-5

Those games are the most important games that you will have. Those are the games that can boost you at least 2k points if you will learn to cut your losses.

A video to all of this is linked below - this was the best comeback I have ever seen by far!

Watch it and I promise you won't be disappointed - How to get 170 points in 1 game (without MMR reset :) ).

All of our previous guides! Take a look if you missed them!

    BG's Getting to 9K- A Guide Part 8 - How to climb

    https://www.reddit.com/r/BobsTavern/comments/k3z5yr/bgs_getting_to_9k_a_guide_part_8_how_to_climb/

    Let's get to it.

We are going to cover 2 basic things: Identification and recovery

    Identification:

Starting on your 7 gold turn, you should ask yourself"Am I strong enough to try and push for the win? Am I strong enough to have the time to scale, find a direction, and go for one of the 2 places?"

If the answer is yes, you are good! Keep on building your build and try to win the game.

That's not what we're worried about here.

We are going to talk about what you should do when the answer is no, when you made an early
mistake or Bob wasn't rooting for you.

It is essential to ask this question every single turn.

If you are in a weak position, identifying it early can help you save tons of points, like losing 20 points instead of losing 100. That can really help you climb, since you basically just earned 80 points. :)

So how can you identify you are weak? Here's some indicators:

    1. You power leveled and got a trash discover off a triple
    2. You lost all the early game fights
    3. Your board is below average with no pairs

All of those are signs that you are weak, but eventually, with practice, you'll be able to tell when you are weak.

Now the big question, what can we do?

Let's talk about something we call "Defensive mode" ( There are probably better names for it, but that's what I call it :) )

    Defensive mode:

We talked about it a little bit in our previous guide in point 6 - "Minimize loses - Identify losing games and get into defensive mode", but I want to go into a bit more detail here.

After identifying we are really weak early, we need to shift how we're thinking about the game.

Usually it is ok to play greedily for a better end game, thinking about how our final comp will look. When you're in defensive mode, this is not the case.

First thing to understand is that if we keep playing the normal way, we're probably dead in 2-3 turns.

We need to find out how we can get our board from garbage to medium immediately. We are not going to have a winning endgame comp, we are going to have a fast, surviving comp.

    How do we do it?

    Few options:

    1. Stay behind the leveling curve: It is ok to delay leveling if you can get stronger in your current tavern.
In the video linked below, we were trying to survive with beasts, we knew we were weak.
We realized we could get stronger for the next turn if we stayed on tavern 3 one more turn.
We did, and it paid off.

    2. Force mechs: If you identify early enough that you are weak, mechs are a great option.
Mechs are relatively easy to build and can hold you as a medium comp through the midgame.
In addition, Annoy-o-Module can massively improve your comp as no other tavern 4 unit can.

    3. Take all the buffs you can find: If you know you are about to lose, upgrading your board by +8/+8 a turn might be enough for 2-3 turn.
while every other player will level to 5, you will scale and you should be fine for 2-3 turn, those turn will grant you the place in the top 5, and when you have a losing game, top 5 is not bad at all!

    4. Divine shield comp: Drakonid Enforcer, Bolvar, and Bronze warden can get you to the medium board you need very fast, and this is a great option if dragons are in.
Add to that Deflecto bot with a refresher and you are good to go.

If you want to climb, identifying a losing game as fast as possible can help you save tons of points.

One of the things we do in our coaching sessions is work very hard to develop this skill since when you will master it, you will see a great improvement in your rank

I got a lot of questions about my coaching sessions, so here is a quick Q&A

    1.Yes, it's all free.
2.I spectate you, let you play, tell you what I think is the best and if I can find patterns that hold you back

    1. It happens here, https://discord.gg/gbEeegY and here https://www.twitch.tv/tenacity191

    2. It happens almost every day.

    3. I'm doing it for free since my dream is to become an E-Sport guide, and I enjoy it so much

If you need any help, just message me in Discord, and I hope you will be as pleased as this guy:

This game is part of a coaching session I played with Korkin, who is very active and helping write these guides <3. Just take a look at our board at 6 gold.

I think this is the weakest board I have ever seen, and since we identified this is a losing game early on (wasn't that hard) we were able to perform one of the best comebacks I've seen.
