Hearthstone Arena: A Guide to Get Good (5 Part Video Series)

    Posted: 24 Jan 2020 06:53 AM PST

Hey guys, I'm Merps, a former NA #1 Arena leaderboard player and I am happy to present my 5 party video series on how to get good at Hearthstone Arena.

Arena is pretty brutal these days. Jumping into the game mode feels more daunting than ever, and I noticed a lack of comprehensive guides for the Arena. Whenever someone asks "how do I improve?" the typical responses include 1) play more and 2) watch streams. These are fine suggestions, but I always thought it would be better to have an all-inclusive guide that players can use to establish the skills needed to go infinite in the Arena. My 5 part video series (totaling 1 hour) is broken down as follows:

    Part 1: Intro, Terminology

    Part 2: Drafting

Part 3: Turn Planning (IMO the most important video)

    Part 4: Playing Your Opponent

Part 5: The Arc of Progress

A couple of disclaimers...I rarely mention specific cards, and I do not give meta advice. My goal was to create a timeless guide that players can refer to again and again over the years. Additionally, the topics, explanations and breakdown are the result of my own opinions on what is most important for success in the Arena. For example, you will see that the Drafting video is only 7 minutes while the Turn Planning video is 18 minutes long. Also, if you are wondering why I didn't include topic X or explain topic Y longer, it's because I wanted to keep this entire thing under 1 hour. Hopefully you enjoy the video series. I'm looking forward to hearing your feedback. Good luck in the Arena!

Hearthstone cards as created by a Markov chain text generator

I've been a massive fan of this legendary post ever since I started browsing the subreddit regularly. Blood Manos, Blacker Spork, and my personal favorite, Magarname have been a fantastic go-to stress relief. I credit it (and the rest of r/hearthstone) for helping keep my love of the game alive.

I wanted to create something similar, but when I started looking through the technical gibberish, I realized it was far over the head of a guy who thought that Python was a kind of snake. I left it alone for a year, until I stumbled across r/flamewanker, a subreddit created by u/The_Giffer, for machine-created custom cards, It was on r/flamewanker that I discovered the Markov Chain Text Generator.

A chain text generator is a program that takes an input text, and analyzes the placement of various words. It then tries to write similar text based on what it's figured out about your input. It's a purely structure-based system, and it's only purpose is to figure out patterns in the 0's and 1's and replicate them as best it can. The best thing about the text generator for a technical nitwit like me, was that it was also very simple to use.

So what would happen if you fed it a lot of Hearthstone cards?

As it turns out, you mostly get a gargantuan load of nonsense. It doesn't really understand that a cost, health, and attack have to be included once and only once. Or that a card's rarity is different from it's text. Or that you can't name a card "Soup Soup Soup Soup Soup Soup Soup Soup Soup Soup Soup Soup."

Curating the input text so that I got a legitimate card more than once or twice per run was the biggest challenge. But occasionally, there were legitimate cards. I made some mild grammatical corrections to make certain cards easier to read and picked out fitting art, but otherwise these cards are exactly as the generator made them.

I would be remiss not to give thanks to u/The_Giffer, u/cremcheez, u/Saparky, and u/DoctorWhoops for creating some of the cards that I ended up using. An additional thank you to all of r/flamewanker for making hilarious content and helping me understand the card-making process.

    On to the cards!

Absurdities - These cards don't make sense. They also tend to be the funniest ones.

Almost There... - These cards are closer to being reasonable, but they still have a ways to go.

Balance Issues - These cards generally stay within gameplay constraints, but are hideously overpowered or pathetically useless.

Interesting - These cards have interesting gameplay mechanics or new takes on existing ones. They're occasionally even balanced.

I like dungeon runs more than Adventures.

While Galakronds awakening is ok, the replay ability is near zero, same as the other adventures. On normal, the decks are premade, so unless you REALLY like a specific fight mechanic, its a one and done thing.

On Heroic you make your own decks, but the bosses are so over powered that you have to make a meme tier deck that is the perfect counter just to win. Get utterly shit on by Avalanchan and his infinite amount of giants on your first go? So make a rogue deck thats nothing but hard removal, bounce/add to deck and Flik Skyshiv. Ta-DA, instant win as you utterly shit on his giants, and watch fatigue win you the game.

And thats it. You might get the urge to try and beat it with one or two other out there decks, but this is not something people will come back to. Between Normal and Heroic i cleared all wing 1 content in about 3 hours. And ill probably never go back to it again. And i have to wait a week for wing 2.

With Dungeon runs it last me a few non-time gated weeks before i get tired of them, and i still occasional get an etch to go back and do one randomly. I have yet to ever go back and do an adventure once I've finished it.

He is already being avoided by all the high level streamers...

The concept is nice, because is quite different to play, but one gold less is hard to catch up the other heroes
