Hello members of the /r/hearthstone community,

This is part of a series of weekly threads aimed at both new and old players from the community. It is designed so that everybody may ask any and all questions regarding the game's mechanics, decks, strategies and more.

Please keep it clean and try to add more than just a one or two word response. As the goal of this post is to increase the community's knowledge, the thought process matters as much as the answer! There is also a Theorycrafting Thursday weekly post, for those who wish to discuss some of the more intricate aspects of the game.

Sticky Threads and Guides - Great resources for new players!

Don’t let Shamanstone distract you from the fact that this card should go at 5 mana.

It's great that they're willing to be flexible, but they have absolutely murdered hype for this expansion

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 09:15 AM PST

One of the best times of the season for any HS player is the first two weeks after an expac drops. Playing with nearly every card, having fun with memes, chilling and generally being able to climb with fun decks... it's all awesome.

But when, in the first 48 hours, a deck emerges that is so oppressively power that it destroys creativity, you have a big issue. I appreciate all the "moderate voices" calling for calm during the initial expac launch, but clearly there was an issue with battlecry galakrond shaman.

To that end, I'm glad that they have been so quick to respond, and within three days announce nerfs. It's a marked change, and while they still have a long way to go, it's an improvement. But here, unfortunately, is where my positivity begins to dwindle.

Announcing upcoming nerfs is great, but the problem is that it has murdered any interest for most players to experiment. Why play with things or try to figure out what works when we know a meta shift is coming? On top of that, I fear that the damage is already done regarding the diminished hype. Several major streamers were already back to BGs by Friday, and usually for me the weekend right after the launch is the big time to experiment. Here, I honestly couldn't be bothered.

So while I am happy to see a change in blizzard, I think there's still a lot of room to grow, and I'm really disappointed by the lack of the normal 2 week fun period. Hopefully the nerfs will bring some of that back, and hopefully we get news about them today.

5000 Win Priest Main, Utterly Disappointed with the State of Priest

    Posted: 15 Dec 2019 09:10 PM PST

In light of supposed Shaman nerfs coming this week, I'm hoping that Blizzard wakes up and realizes that as egregiously overpowered Shaman is, Priest is just as, if not more, egregiously UNDERpowered.

Even if Shaman gets nerfed, Priest will still be sitting at a sub-40% win rate, and the reason is obvious: they have NO identity, and any identity they did have, every other class does it so much better.

Healing? Paladin got a 5-mana 4/6 that heals for 8. Priest got nothing.

Stealing from opponents? Compare Hench Clan Burglar to Envoy of Lazul. It's an absolute joke.

Deathrattles? Rogue got Necrium Apothecary, one of the most broken Deathrattle cards ever released. Priest? The only playable card they received in this expansion was Mindflayer Khaarj, a.k.a. "Sometimes-a-Piloted-Shredder."

Board clears? Warlock got Crazed Netherwing, a Duskbreaker on steroids, and an amazing 3-Mana board clear. Priest got a shitty Abomination and Volcanic Potion, 3 years too late.

Value? Quest Shaman and Control Warrior absolutely laugh at Galakrond Priest. Yes, I love me some 3 Mana Test Subjects!!

Combo? Good luck when we're STILL relying on Northshire Cleric as our only source of card draw.

What exactly does Priest do? Why are all our cards taxed on stats and effects for no apparent reason other than "sorry, you're Priest"?

Does ANYONE on team 5 play Priest at all? How can a balance team release DoD for Shaman and Priest side-by-side and give the cards a pass? It is appallingly bad.

I went on an 18-game losing streak trying to make Galakrond Priest work, and it's not like I'm a random rank 20 player that has no experience with Priest. I've reached top 4 Legend this season and top 3 multiple times in the past, and this is BY FAR the worst state that Priest has ever been.

Would love to have a dev response on the state of Priest because at this point, if they have no intention of actually crafting Priest cards with any attention or care, at least have the decency to admit the fact that they don't know what they're doing and bring players/designers on board that do.

Edit: Thank you for the gold, kind stranger!

    The Nine Days of Meme-mas

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 06:54 AM PST

    Happy Feast of Winterveil /r/hearthstone!

The mod team would like to present you with a gift for this holiday season. The Nine Days of Meme-mas.

From now until December 25th, we will be allowing any and all Hearthstone related memes here on the subreddit. All other rules still apply, directly and indirectly to the memes. They must be hearthstone related, must not break the behavior or other rules and should not look like they were made in paint in 10 seconds, so put at least a little bit of effort into them.

We've added a new Meme link flair type, so PLEASE flair your posts properly. Also, you can use this flair tag to filter out and HIDE Meme posts as well using RES.

    Happy shitposting

    Descent Of Dragons: What Happened?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2019 10:09 AM PST

Obligatory I am not a game designer, yada yada yada, this is my opinion.

It's no doubt among anyone that Descent of Dragons is the strongest expansion ever released. End of year expansions are known for being big game-changers, notably Gadgetzan and Kobolds being the best previous examples (and Rumble just sobbing in the corner, I suppose.) I think, however, that DoD's power level was no mistake - the developers knew they were creating a strong set.

To talk about good cards, we first have to talk about bad cards.

MTG is (afaik) the longest running card game to date. They've consistently created their own world, lore, and cards within it year after year for decades, and people keep coming back to them, As this pioneer of card games, they learned a lot of lessons about game design firsthand - or at least, their experience with them. I bring this up to talk about one of their most famous (or infamous) articles on card design - When cards go bad. It's oft been considered a "fact" that in every expansion, there are bad cards - and I'm not debating this. It's a frankly ridiculous fever dream to imagine a meta where every card is top tier. The problem, I think, is the conclusion designers drew from this.

Legends of Runeterra recently launched their open beta, and one of the things that stood out to me is that they didn't design any purposely "packfiller/garbage" type cards. Sure, you had your purposeful jank, like the 9 mana 30/30 kitty that could only be summoned under specific circumstances (remind anyone of anything) or their fun off meta archetypes like mushrooms (an archetype revolving around filling the enemies deck with tiny 1 damage mines) but no card seemed to exist to take up space. All the parts of discovery, of appealing to different players and such were present, but nothing that was designed explicitly to not be playable. And it hit me, and I think it hit the Hearthstone devs too.

See, that fact about that there's always bad cards was taken to mean that you need to make bad cards, that the expansion won't function without purposely designed bad cards. I believe Descent of Dragons was the dev team attempting to forgo that philosophy of "there must always be pack filler" and print only cards meant to see at least some play.

And, for the most part, I don't think that was a bad decision.

There are many cards that are just plain decent. Troll Batrider, Big Ol' Whelp, and Emerald Explorer to name a few. All of these see play, and none of them do anything absurd or crazy- they're just designed to be able to compete with the crazy synergy cards. I think the design team made a mistake in that they didn't design the cards that would normally be their "strong cards" keeping this in mind - Faceless Corruptor was meant to be a pushed card to push midrange, but they pushed it above the already strong powerlevel of the set. Dragon's Pack was meant to be a defensive tool to help Galakrond Shaman be a decent defensive deck that countered pure aggro, but ended up being just too much pressure for too simple a requirement.

I think going forward that continuing this design philosophy isn't a bad thing. While for now it's creating a sort of system shock, because Hearthstone has effectively gotten 2-3 previous expansions in one in terms of "power cards," it should be able to stabilize in the future (though hopefully at a lower average power level.) Wild is notably going to need a lot more care and attention given to it going forward to make sure it isn't overwhelmed, but I think this change is a good thing for everyone - notably F2P or lower budget players, given you no longer have to worry about opening a pack and getting only garbage.

TL;DR: the new expansion was a conscious design decision to stop releasing shitty cards and this is overall a good thing, even if some mistakes were made in the process cough assimilate or die cough
