Battlegrounds is fun, but Standard is so unfun right now

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 07:24 AM PST

I've been playing battlegrounds pretty much all the time I've been on Hearthstone since it released. I've gone back to Play mode a couple times in the past few days... and it's so bad. You either lose to Evolve Shaman or play it and never draw evolve.

    Two more weeks, I guess.

I've been loving the new battlegrounds mode and came up with some new hero powers that I think might spice things up a bit and take advantage of some unused mechanics in the game

    Battlegrounds: Quick Beginner's Guide

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 07:33 AM PST

    Hero Selection:

General rule of thumb: Pick one with a passive hero power, these do pretty well at the moment and you can use your gold for other things. If you want to go into more details, refer to this tier list.

    Turn 1 (3 gold):

    Pick one minion.

    • 1st choice: A minion which summons another one (Murloc Tidehunter, Alleycat)
    • 2nd choice: A minion with good chances to win the first fights (e.g. Vulgar Homunculus, Rockpool Hunter, Voidwalker)
    • 3rd choice: Anything else

Freeze if you'd have another 1st choice minion available after your pick.

    Turn 2 (4 gold):

    Upgrade your tavern.

Freeze if you'd have a 1st choice minion available to pick.

    Turn 3 (5 gold):

If you already have two minions (one which was summoned), you should sell the summoned one to be able to pick two better ones this turn.

If you have one minion but you're being offered a 1st choice minion, pick it, play it, sell the summoned minion and pick another.

If you have one minion and you're not being offered a summoner, pick another minion with good stats/synergy and/or reroll. Definitely pick at least one minion. Freeze if you're being offered another good pick you can't purchase yet.

    Turn 4 (6 gold):

    Pick two minions, don't reroll.

    Turn 5 (7 gold):

Upgrade your tavern, pick one minion.

    Turn 6-11 (midgame):

You can now start rerolling a bit to look for synergies. These synergies often refer to the tribes (see below), so you would look for specific cards (like Hyena for the beast tribe) and pick synergetic cards (Rat Pack, Infested Wolf) afterwards.

If possible, try to pick at least two minions per turn - avoid to spend the majority of your gold for rerolls at this point of time. Amalgam Nightmares are often instant picks at this time, since they fit to every tribe and can be buffed nicely.

An advice on positioning which becomes important by now: On the left should be minions with cleave (to destroy divine shields effectively) and on the right should be your primary damage dealer (e.g. Hyena or Junkbot). Try to not have a taunt minion next to your damage dealer, otherwise the latter might instantly die to a cleave attack. If possible, have your divine shield minions spread out so they don't get cleaved.

    Turn 12+ (lategame):

If you've made it this far, congrats! You're probably now focused on one tribe, so try to find the best minions for your tribe, but also don't forget to buff your current minions as good as possible.

    Typical beginner faults:

    • Focusing on one tribe too early (sometimes even before the midgame)
    • Rerolling too much which leads to weaker boards and frivolous early losses of hp.
    • Rushing your tavern upgrades, also leading to weak boards.

    Overview and evaluation of tribes:

Beasts: Easiest to play in my opinion, since you have good options on pretty much all tavern tiers. They are particularly strong in the midgame.

Murlocs: Particularly strong in the early game. If you decide to stick to them and doing well, try to upgrade your tavern fast to get access to Gentle Megasaur, a tier 6 minion, which might grant your murlocs Poisonous and Divine Shield if you're lucky, so you're also set for the late game.

Mechs: Strong in the mid-/lategame, you might need to upgrade to tavern tier 5 rather quickly for having access to Junkbots, unless you're able to set up a good combo with Cobalt Guardian soon.

Demons: Rather hard to utilize and often inferior to other tribes, would not recommend for beginners.

Menagerie: Going for every tribe at the same time, which works best with a combo of Nightmare Amalgams and Lightfang Enforcers. Probably the best combo for the lategame, but heavy pick-dependent and therefore hard to set up consistently.

    Disclaimer:

This guide isn't meant to be conclusive or 100% objectively correct, but just a little guidance for beginners to help them survive their first games. It's also meant to generally describe a decent playstyle without going into details or covering specific scenarios, for example with certain heroes which affect your tavern upgrade timings. My sources are just my own experience and watching streamers.

    Effective date of guide:

Any chance they'll add a way to play battlegrounds with just friends?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 10:55 AM PST

I have a group of friends that want to play the game with each other, but currently battlegrounds only has 2-friend matchmaking. Is there a chance that we can make a private lobby and just play with friends?

Arena needs to be fixed. It's gotten overlooked with how imbalanced standard sounds.

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 01:08 PM PST

The picks are random now. You'll see Spikeridged Steed as a choice against Deadscale Knight.

With fair choices you had to make decisions based on the meta. Do you need a small removal or a big one? Hellfire or Shadowflame? Strong aggressive card or strong value card? Now the meta is you get handed cards and curve out. 25/30 picks are good card over the bad card.

In each game mode they seem to have made things random and imbalanced in a way that shouldn't stay long.

    We need more Deckslots...

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 03:25 PM PST

I know it's babycry and the technology isn't there yet. But there are so many viable archetypes rn and its just annoying keep tracking and deleting Decks which you might wanna play later on. Imo this would be a very good quality of life update.

Blizzard pls invest more in the technology development and do some copy past coding. This would be very nice and fancy. Thank you.
